Farewell to former Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan

A fine reception was held on Monday, 9 January 2017 in the UN Delegates Dining Room at UN Headquarters
to give a fond farewell to former Permanent Representative Kairat Abdrakhmanov and to welcome new Permanent
Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN, Ambassador Kairat Umarov.

Ambassador Kairat Abdrakhmanov was appointed as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to
the United Nations on November 26, 2013 and has served excellently since that time. He previously served
as Kazakhstan’s permanent representative to the United Nations. Mr. Abdrakhmanov also served as Kazakhstan’s
representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and Deputy Minister of
Foreign Affairs and Deputy Chief of Mission; and Minister-Counselor of the Embassy of Kazakhstan to the
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. He is now going to…..

Ambassador Kairat Umarov, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres earlier.
Mr. Umarov held various positions in his country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the past 25 years;
his most recent as Ambassador to the United States since January 2013. From 2009 to 2012, he served as
Deputy Foreign Minister overseeing international organizations, including the United Nations, as well
as bilateral relations with the United States and the Western Hemisphere.

In 2008, the Government of Kazakhstan gave Mr. Umarov additional responsibility as non-resident Ambassador to Sri Lanka, having been appointed Ambassador to India in August 2004. He was also First Secretary and Counselor (1994-1996),
and later Deputy Chief of Mission (1998-2003) in previous service at his country’s Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Additionally, Mr. Umarov has worked at the Centre for Foreign Policy in Kazakhstan’s Presidential Administration.

In attendance were prominent members of the United Nations, worldwide business leaders, respected patrons of
the art community, and the media, including, publisher and editor-in chief, Gloria Starr Kins and editor of
Society & Diplomatic Review, artistic director & celebrity photographer, Eric von Lockhart and yours truly, Penelope Bunn.
