The President of the United Nations General Assembly H.E. Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande announced, today, the results of the elections of the President of the 75th session of the General Assembly, non-permanent members of the Security Council and members of the Economic and Social Council.
The elections were held simultaneously in the General Assembly hall on 17 June, in accordance with decision 74/755 of 29 May 2020, entitled, “Procedure for holding elections by secret ballot without a plenary meeting during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic”.
Having obtained the required majority of members present and voting and the greatest number of votes, H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkir of Turkey is elected President of the 75th session of the General Assembly.
Non-permanent members of the Security Council having obtained two-thirds majority of members present and voting and the greatest number of votes, India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway are elected members of the SC Council for a 2-year term beginning on 1 January 2021.
There still remains one seat to be filled for the African States. Djibouti and Kenya have not acquired the required majority. The General Assembly will hold the first restricted ballot on Thursday, 18 June from 9:00 am in the General Assembly Hall.
Members of the Economic and Social Council having obtained two-thirds majority of members present and voting and the greatest number of votes, the following 18 States are elected members of ECOSOC for a 3-year term beginning on 1 January 2021:
Argentina, Austria, Bolivia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Guatemala, Indonesia, Japan, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Mexico, Nigeria, Portugal, Solomon Islands, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.
