Security Council briefing on Conflict & Hunger with UN World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Dire
In the session, the UN World Food Programme’s Executive Director Mr. David Beasley spoke about the detrimental implications of COVID-19 on civilians already suffering from hunger because of conflict. He was joined by Mr. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization and Mr. Jan Egeland, Secretary-General, Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
While we can reach zero hunger by 2030, we cannot do so as long as there is conflict. Mr. Beasley and his counterparts explores some actions needed to prevent and mitigate conflict-induced hunger, and how we address those in need, particularly in the global COVID-19 pandemic, which will further exacerbate the plight of vulnerable populations affected by crisis across the globe.
They highlighted findings from the 2020 Global Food Crises Report which will be published. The Global Report on Food Crises is an assessment of acute food insecurity situations around the world carried out by 16 partners, including WFP. The report provides data which can guide coordinated and strategic humanitarian and development investments.
Two years after the adoption of the landmark Security Council Resolution 2417 (May 2018), the Dominican Republic, holding the Presidency of the Security Council for the month of April, hosted a Council briefing on one of the greatest humanitarian challenges affecting civilians in most conflict-affected countries: conflict-induced hunger.
